Fucoxanthin is one of approx. 650 carotenoids existing in nature, and it is mainly contained in brown algae with special effects.
Fucoxanthin is a bright orange color with a maximum absorption wavelength at 450 nm, and it changes to blue (fucoxanthinol hemiketal) with the maximum absorption wavelength around 700nm in highly acidic environment.
The activity of carotenoids is widely known for their antioxidant effect. Fucoxanthin also shows a strong  antioxidant effect like other carotenoids. Compared with β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthine, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin, lycopene, rutin and other carotenoids, whose antioxidant effect only works under aerobic conditions, fucoxanthin is featured with a strong antioxidant effect under low oxygen partial pressure (such as in organisms).
In this way, the exclusive properties of fucoxanthin among the carotenoids began to be recognized, and various important functions were discovered.

Fucoxanthin is a sulfated polysaccharide contained in the transparent "mucus" on the surface of seaweed.
When tides or sand currents damage the stems or leaves, this “mucus” functions to prevent bacteria from entering the wound. It can also prevents dryness and retain moisture on seaweed.
The fucoxanthin was discovered in 1913 by Swedish scholar Kylin. In recent years its immune-enhancing effect has attracted people’s attention, and various studies are being promoted all over the world in order to achieve  beauty or nutrition supplement.
